THE ONLINE PORTFOLIO OF DANIEL SWEENEY : ABOUT
On this page I will go into a little more detail about some of that which goes into the creation of my websites and
animation. It’s quite important that these things are made properly.
I have a wide skill set, that I have built up over my years in education and freelance work.
But specifically, as it pertains to website development and design, I write up my sites in the strictest,
most standards-compliant mark-up or coding. Namely: XHTML 1.0
and HTML 4.01.
For presentation and layout of pages, I use CSS.
When employing a backend I have used Coldfusion to produce a fully
functional website and I have used PHP when editing sites throughout my placement and I am currently in the middle
of producing a fully functional working website with content management system and a simple user guide for
how to use this system.
On top of this, to make certain things happen for certain standards-lacking browsers, I also
write a little bit of JavaScript. In general, I make accessible, usable sites which are visually
striking while being considerate to the largest segment of the population possible.
Using the skills mentioned above I build websites which comply with web standards, are coded in a proper semantic way.
I meticulously hand code the sites I make, but I still prepare them in a very modular way, enhancing their extensibility.
I design sites with strong emphasis on usability, accessibility, cross-browser
and machine (screen readers, etc.) compatibility, and I also optimize them, for speed and performance,
and also for search engines so you can be found quickly — which is important if your site is affiliated
with or in support of a business.
Lastly, but still of great importance, I make sites with design in mind at all times. My sites must look
great while meeting all of the other self-imposed standards I subscribe to. Standards-compliance
and accessibility do not mean boring.
As well as the above I also produce websites and animation using Adobe Flash and
action script language. This allows me to produce more movement and eye catching features within a site or a piece
of work. This software allows me to reach another level of designing and production. I can also use many image manipulation
programs such as Adobe Photoshop. For a full list of my skills and qualifications please see my
CV.
